Shoe customization for me is another way that art and science fuse together to become something more. The all white Nike Air Force 1 is a three-dimensional canvas that can be transformed into a magnificent piece of art. The difference being that they are not meant to be encased in glass for others to admire - they are meant to be worn with pride as a statement.
Oregon Pride
People in the Pacific Northwest have pride in their land and love to display it. Ask anybody at the University of Oregon and they will tell you that the Ducks are a way of life. So before starting school at the U of O, I wanted to customize a pair of shoes that encapsulates the greatest elements of Oregon.
Opposites Attract
Like Ying and Yang, Oregon has many opposites of equal beauty and amazement. From the night sky filled with stars and cosmic wonders, to the mountainscapes visible from any where along I-5, you will find polar partners that juxtapose each other in the most beautiful ways. That is why I represent each shoe as the opposite of the other, specifically contrasting the colors and the scenery.
The Process
Starting from concept imagery, I then sketch out ideas for the shoe design on computer drafted templates of a life size shoe. First drawing out my ideas by hand helped me to fine-tune the details of the design before putting the brush to the shoe.
